HVAC Spring Cleaning: Indoors

The weather is going to be warm sooner than later. Before turning on your air conditioner, there are a few things you will want to get done. Here is a spring cleaning checklist that will ensure an efficient air conditioning system for the warm weather ahead!

Change the air filter

As the seasons change, it’s a good time to change your air filter. You should be changing your air filter about every 90 days or as often as the package directs. Some air filters suggest changing the filter in as little as 30 days. Replacing your air filter can increase the systems efficiency by as much as 5%. For pet owners or if you suffer from allergies or asthma, changing your filter every month can reduce symptoms from poor indoor air quality.

Turn on Fans

Use your ceiling fans before you turn on your air conditioner. Using your ceiling fans can help circulate the air, improve indoor air quality and save you money. If it feels like it’s getting warm in your house but not warm enough to turn on the AC, ceiling fans should do the trick.

Clean Registers

Spring is a great time to clean your air vents. Air vents can oftentimes be forgotten about, but they are just as important as your systems. Make sure that each vent is open so air can move freely throughout your home. Also make sure that furniture, rugs and curtains aren't blocking your vents. Blocking your vents can restrict airflow and lead to your home conditioning at an uneven temperature. To clean your air vents, remove the grills and soak them in warm water and soap. While they are soaking, vacuum out any particles, dust or pet air that has accumulated during the winter. Dry off the grills and replace them when they are done soaking.

Adjust Thermostat

If you have a programmable thermostat, it is a great idea to set up a new schedule since the weather is changing. If you don’t already have a programmable thermostat, it is highly recommended. It not only provides optimal comfort, it saves energy which saves you money!

These are some things that you can do on your own indoors to prepare for the warm weather. Make sure that you remember to get a maintenance check too! Having a trusted professional look at your systems a couple times a year will keep your systems running properly when you need them and prevent problems from happening in the future.
